Telemecanique OsiSense XU Photoelectric Sensor
Model: XU9M18MA230
1. General Description
The Telemecanique XU9M18MA230 is a cylindrical M18 photoelectric sensor from the OsiSense XU series. It operates in polarized retroreflective mode, which makes it highly effective at detecting objects while ignoring glare from shiny backgrounds or targets. To function, it requires a special prismatic reflector.
A key feature of this model is its universal AC/DC power supply, allowing it to be used in a wide variety of control circuits without concern for power type. Housed in a robust, nickel-plated brass body, it is well-suited for standard industrial applications like packaging, material handling, and conveying.
Key Features 🎯
- Polarized Retroreflective: Provides reliable detection and prevents false signals from reflective surfaces.
- Universal Voltage: Operates on a wide voltage range of 24…240V AC/DC.
- Standard M18 Body: Industry-standard M18 threaded cylindrical housing for versatile mounting.
- Robust Metal Housing: Features a durable nickel-plated brass body for mechanical protection.
- Visual Status Indicator: An integrated LED provides a clear visual indication of the output state.

3. Principle of Operation & Wiring
This sensor emits a polarized beam of light. A special prismatic reflector (e.g., model XUZC50) is required, which rotates the polarization of the light by 90° before returning it. The sensor is designed to only detect light with this specific rotation. Shiny objects that reflect the light without changing its polarization are ignored.
As a 2-wire device, it is connected in series with the load, just like a mechanical switch.
Typical Connection:
Power Line (L1 or +) → Sensor → Load → Return Line (N or -)
