The Telemecanique XU9M18MA230 is a cylindrical M18 photoelectric sensor from the OsiSense XU series. It operates in polarized retroreflective mode, which makes it highly effective at detecting objects while ignoring glare from shiny backgrounds or targets. To function, it requires a special prismatic reflector.

3. Principle of Operation & Wiring

 

This sensor emits a polarized beam of light. A special prismatic reflector (e.g., model XUZC50) is required, which rotates the polarization of the light by 90° before returning it. The sensor is designed to only detect light with this specific rotation. Shiny objects that reflect the light without changing its polarization are ignored.

As a 2-wire device, it is connected in series with the load, just like a mechanical switch.

Power Line (L1 or +) → Sensor → Load → Return Line (N or -)
